Coaching angling course for juniors
Angling Coaching Initiative
The successful coaching scheme for juniors we supported since 2018 is starting again for this season in May. The scheme is aimed to bring juniors aged 8 to 16 into the sport whose parents do not fish but also to develop the skills of juniors new to angling. The scheme, therefore, caters for both novices and those who already fish.
This is a joint venture with Kelvedon & District Angling Association, Maldon Angling Society and Colchester Angling Preservation Society with coaching sessions throughout the May – September period on a variety of waters, split between the three clubs. Those enrolled will be welcome at some or all sessions. They or their parents do not need to be members of KDAA, MAS or CAPS. Parents and Grand Parents etc are welcome to join in as well.
The courses are run by accredited Angling Trust Level 2 Coaches, Chris Burt and Graham Garnham who both hold Enhanced DBS checks, Safeguarding & Protecting Children, First Aid course etc.
A group of Voluntary Assistant Coaches from the participant clubs are essential to the success of the courses. A number of these Assistant Coaches have gone on to get their level 1 and 2 coaching qualifications. The participants currently have to attend with an adult ‘helper’ from their household to comply with Covid 19 restrictions.
We will be teaching them everything to get them hooked, from starter sessions using a 4 metre whip, on to full tuition on float rods, feeders and pole fishing. The aim is to capture their interest and give them a sport for life! Tackle and bait will be provided, with modest fees to cover ACI costs.
The 2020 season, of course, was badly disrupted by the pandemic, but we still managed half our usual programme with carefully managed precautions against Covid-19.
The dates for the current season are shown in the Match Fixtures list on our website and the ACI website – Information Events calendar. These are again being run under Covid restrictions.
We had a successful 2021 season with sixteen coaching sessions which were over subscribed, two more than planned to allow some of of the applicants on a waiting list to participate. Dates for next year are in the process of being agreed with the participating angling clubs with the intention of resuming coaching in May 2022.
The main limiting factor is the need for more Voluntary Coaches to meet the demand. If you can help with even one or two sessions it would be greatly appreciated.
