Coaching angling course for juniors

Angling Coaching Initiative

The successful coaching scheme for juniors we supported since 2018 is starting again for this season in May. The scheme is aimed  to bring juniors aged 8 to 16 into the sport whose parents do not fish but also to develop the skills of juniors new to angling. The scheme, therefore, caters for both novices and those who already fish.  All clubs have seen the number if youngsters engaging in angling fall over recent years.

This is a joint venture with Kelvedon & District Angling Association, Maldon Angling Society, Colchester Angling Preservation Society, Colchester Piscatorial Society  and Colnes Angling Society with coaching sessions throughout the May – October period on a variety of waters, split between the five clubs.  The ACI is an umbrella non-profit making organisation.

Those enrolled will be welcome at some or all sessions. They or their parents do not need to be members of any of the hosting fishing clubs. Parents and Grand Parents etc are welcome to join in as well.  For many of the younger students they will rely upon a parent to take them fishing outside of the coaching scheme so for us coaching the parents is equally important.

The courses are run by accredited Angling Trust Level 2 Coaches, Chris Burt and Graham Garnham who both hold Enhanced DBS checks, Safeguarding & Protecting Children, First Aid course etc.

A group of Voluntary Assistant Coaches from the participant clubs are essential to the success of the courses. A number of these Assistant Coaches have gone on to get their level 1 and 2 coaching qualifications.

We will be teaching them everything to get them hooked, from starter sessions using a 4 metre whip, on to full tuition on float rods, feeders and pole fishing. The aim is to capture their interest and give them a sport for life!  Tackle and bait will be provided, with modest fees to cover ACI costs, currently £15 per junior with concessions for a family..

The dates for the current season are shown in the Match Fixtures list on our website and the ACI website – Information Events calendar.

We had a successful 2023 season with over twenty coaching sessions.   Dates for this year have been agreed with the participating angling clubs starting in May 2024 and ending in October.

The main limiting factor is the need for more Voluntary Coaches to improve the coach/student ratio. If you can help with even one or two sessions it would be greatly appreciated.
